Early prison release recipient now stands accused of multiple murders

In a shocking turn of events, a man previously incarcerated is now accused of heinous crimes in Portland.

Jesse Calhoun, released early due to participation in a prison firefighting program, allegedly killed multiple women, urging families to demand accountability from former Oregon officials, as the Daily Mail reports.

The early release of Calhoun, approved under former Gov. Kate Brown's administration, is raising alarms after the man was accused of being behind a spate of homicides in the Portland metro area.

The aforementioned decision permitted Calhoun, with a history of severe criminal activities, to walk free in 2021, a release linked to his involvement in a prison-firefighter initiative.

Convicted in 2019, Calhoun was serving a sentence for violent offenses against law enforcement and was released ahead of schedule. His criminal record spans a wide array of offenses, including assault, kidnapping, burglary, drug possession, and theft, reflecting an extensive history of felonious conduct.

Families reeling from grief, anger

After his release, Calhoun allegedly embarked on a series of murders that left the community in shock. Between November 2022 and April 2023, he is accused of taking the lives of Kristin Smith, Joanna Speaks, Charity Lynn Perry, and Bridget Leanne Webster, referred to collectively as the "Portland Five."

The victims, known for struggling with homelessness and substance abuse, disappeared during the unsettling months, and their bodies were discovered in spring 2023. Law enforcement initially dismissed the idea of a serial killer linking the cases, leading to criticism from the victims' families for perceived negligence in early investigations.

Only Joanna Speaks's cause of death has been conclusively confirmed, and it was marked by blunt force trauma to the head. As law enforcement connected the dots, Calhoun became a person of interest in 2023, ultimately leading to his indictment for multiple murders by 2024 and 2025.

Heartfelt calls for accountability emerge

Melissa Smith, grieving mother of one of the victims, visibly expressed her deep-seated anguish and resentment towards the authorities. She articulated her belief that a tremendous oversight in judgment occurred when Calhoun was admitted to the program and subsequently released early.

She said, "I'm not going to say it's their fault. But I am going to say I think they owe us moms an apology. They did us dirty. You would think okay, somebody that broke into a fence or did some kind of little thing, yeah, let them go fight [the fires]. Not a criminal like Jesse Lee Calhoun that has more than 60 charges on him between August of 2013 and April of 2019."

Smith received a distressing call indicating that Calhoun was to be re-indicted for her daughter’s murder, a painful reminder of her loss. This call, arriving 445 days after the investigation initially linked him to the cases, intensified demands for justice.

Answers in other cases awaited

There is another case involving 22-year-old Ashley Real that remains under investigation, potentially extending the list of victims. These developments have added fuel to the families' calls for a comprehensive re-evaluation of early release programs and increased scrutiny of their participants.

Crime tragedies such as these emphasize the precarious balance between rehabilitation opportunities and public safety. As the community reflects on these events, questions about policy and procedural accountability rise to the forefront.

Jesse Calhoun, now facing a significant and harrowing trial, is anticipated to answer these grave charges in 2027, when justice for the victims will be sought in a court of law.

The Portland metro area remains on edge as it comes to terms with these tragic losses, contemplating the difficult intersection of rehabilitative justice and the catastrophic results of its failure.
