A shocking act of violence has rocked Utah Valley University, where a prominent conservative activist was fatally shot during a public event.
On Wednesday, conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, with suspect Tyler Robinson, 22, now in custody and facing charges of aggravated murder and other felonies and new information about his actions continuing to emerge, as News Nation reports.
The incident unfolded at 12:23 p.m. on that tragic day, as hundreds listened to Kirk in a campus courtyard.
According to arrest documents from the Utah Attorney General’s Office, a gunshot rang out, striking Kirk in the neck, leading to severe bleeding.
He was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, where medical staff pronounced him deceased shortly after arrival.
Investigators relied heavily on surveillance footage from the university to piece together the suspect’s actions leading up to the shooting.
Video evidence captured an individual, later identified as Robinson, on the rooftop of the Losee Center building at the time of the incident.
He was wearing a dark hat, sunglasses, and a black shirt with an eagle design as he prepared to launch the attack.
The footage detailed Robinson’s movements starting at 11:50 a.m., showing him crossing a grassy area, pausing near a pedestrian tunnel, and eventually entering the Losee Center before positioning himself on the rooftop by 12:17 p.m.
At 12:22 p.m., Robinson was seen taking a prone position on the west side of the rooftop, and just a minute later, the fatal shot was fired.
After the shooting, surveillance showed him fleeing the scene, carrying what was later identified as a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel, which was recovered in a nearby grassy area with trees.
Among the evidence, investigators found bullet casings with unsettling inscriptions, hinting at possible motives or taunts, though no specific intent has been officially confirmed by authorities.
On Thursday, a breakthrough came when a family member reported Robinson’s confession to a friend, who then alerted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, prompting a multi-agency response involving the FBI.
Further investigation uncovered Discord messages from Robinson’s roommate, revealing discussions about acquiring a rifle, hiding it, and even engraving bullets, which corroborated the physical evidence found at the scene.
In the early hours of Friday, Robinson was located and arrested, wearing clothing matching descriptions from campus footage, and was booked into Utah County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated murder.
