Virginia gubernatorial candidate faces scrutiny amid defamation lawsuit

Lorna Morales,
 September 15, 2025

In a legal battle gripping Richmond, Virginia, a defamation lawsuit has thrust a prominent political figure into the spotlight.

This case involves Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic Party's nominee to become Virginia governor, who has been called as a witness in a lawsuit by Thomas Speciale, a retired Army intelligence officer and former Republican U.S. Senate candidate, over a 2022 press release by the Democratic Party of Virginia that allegedly defamed him with false claims of violence during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol unrest, as the Daily Signal reports.

The press release, published on Nov. 3, 2022, just days before the midterm elections, accused Speciale of being an insurrectionist who harmed law enforcement during the Capitol events.

Speciale contends that these accusations are baseless. He filed a defamation suit against the Democratic Party of Virginia in March 2023 after a cease-and-desist letter sent in November 2022 was ignored.

The press release, since removed from the party's website but still accessible via the Internet Archive, has become a central piece of evidence in this ongoing dispute.

Campaign's involvement scrutinized

Court documents reveal that the 2022 press release was drafted by staff from Spanberger’s congressional reelection campaign.

Justin Chermol, then press secretary for the campaign, confirmed drafting the statement, which was approved by campaign manager Sam Signori and communications director Connor Joseph.

Interestingly, both now hold similar roles on Spanberger’s gubernatorial campaign team.

Gianni Snidle, former press secretary for the Democratic Party of Virginia, also verified that he collaborated with Chermol on the document and that Spanberger’s campaign gave its approval.

Speciale has sought to question Spanberger directly about her involvement, but after she submitted a sworn affidavit denying knowledge of the release, the judge permitted only written questions -- 350 of them -- to be submitted for her response.

Legal challenges and public interest intersect

Speciale’s attorney faced objections from Jeffrey Breit, counsel for the Democratic Party of Virginia, who argued that the extensive list of questions was irrelevant to the case.

Speciale, however, recently defended his approach in court, pushing for answers that could clarify the origins of the disputed statement.

In a separate legal action, Speciale targeted Chermol, Snidle, and Spanberger, though Spanberger was removed from this suit in January 2024 due to a failure to serve her with legal documents. A witness, Darrell Smith, testified that on Jan. 9, 2024, at a Democratic Party office in Washington, D.C., Spanberger appeared to avoid Speciale by hurrying away in the rain, though Smith admitted he lacked official permission to serve papers.

Below is a statement from Speciale, shared with the Daily Signal, highlighting his perspective on the press release and his actions during the Jan. 6 events.

The press release defames me, stating that I was a notable insurrectionist who attacked the United States Capitol and that I bloodied and beat law enforcement. The truth is the exact opposite -- I was warning the government of possible violence at the National Counterterrorism Center and the FBI, and I was there trying to stop potential violence on January 6th.

As the Richmond City Circuit Court schedules a trial for April 13-16, 2026, this case continues to draw attention, with no comments provided by the Democratic Party of Virginia, Spanberger’s 2025 campaign, their attorneys, the FBI, or the National Counterterrorism Center despite requests from The Daily Signal. The outcome may resonate beyond the courtroom, touching on issues of political accountability and public trust as Spanberger campaigns for governor.
