DOJ poised to deploy election monitors to Democrat strongholds

Lorna Morales,

This week, the Department of Justice revealed plans to dispatch federal election observers to California and New Jersey, as the Associated Press reports. This move, announced just days before critical elections, targets two states known for their Democratic Party leanings. It’s a bold step toward safeguarding the vote.

The monitoring will focus on Passaic County in New Jersey and five counties in southern and central California: Los Angeles, Orange, Kern, Riverside, and Fresno. The DOJ’s mission is clear -- ensure transparency, secure ballots, and uphold federal law. This isn’t new; election oversight is routine for the agency.

These actions stem from requests by Republican parties in both states, with the California GOP sending its letter on Oct. 21. They cited troubling irregularities in recent elections across the targeted counties. It’s about time someone addressed these persistent concerns.

Critical elections under scrutiny

Both states face high-stakes elections on Nov. 4 with national implications. New Jersey has an open governor’s seat, drawing massive spending from both sides. California, meanwhile, is voting on a redistricting plan that could tilt up to five U.S. House seats toward Democrats by 2026.

In California, the GOP pointed to issues like incorrect or duplicate ballots and sloppy voter roll maintenance in places like Los Angeles and Orange counties. When voting systems falter, public trust erodes fast. The DOJ stepping in might just restore some confidence.

California's voting habits add another layer of complexity, with most casting mail ballots through postal services or drop boxes. Polling places often sit quiet on Election Day, yet counting drags on for weeks. Remember 2024, when a Central Valley race wasn’t settled until early December?

Passaic County becomes flashpoint

Over in New Jersey., the Republican State Committee demanded oversight in Passaic County, a heavily Latino area once reliably Democrat. It flipped to support President Donald Trump in the last presidential race. Now, it’s pivotal for GOP gubernatorial hopeful Jack Ciattarelli against Democrat Mikie Sherrill.

The New Jersey GOP highlighted past voter fraud, including a 2020 Paterson case where a judge ordered a new city council election after fraud charges. History like this demands vigilance. Federal monitors could be the guardrails needed for a fair count.

Passaic monitoring will zero in on vote-by-mail processing and round-the-clock access to the Board of Elections. With such a critical race at stake, ensuring every ballot is legitimate isn’t just prudent -- it’s essential. Democrats crying foul seem more worried about optics than integrity.

Democrats push back, ignore past problems

Democrats in both states have predictably pushed back against the DOJ’s involvement. Some call it interference, yet ignore documented voting hiccups in their own backyards. Isn’t it ironic that transparency suddenly feels like a threat to them?

“Highly inappropriate,” said New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, describing the DOJ’s move, adding that the DOJ “has not even attempted to identify a legitimate basis for its actions.”

Platkin’s outrage sidesteps the 2020 fraud in Paterson -- hardly a baseless concern. If anything, federal oversight protects voters from local failures. Democrats should welcome scrutiny if their systems are as flawless as they claim.

Historical context supports DOJ move

Election observers aren’t a novelty; both parties routinely station them at polling sites nationwide. The DOJ has long monitored areas with histories of voting rights issues to enforce federal law. Under the prior Biden administration, some GOP-led states even blocked federal access on Election Day.

“Transparency at the polls translates into faith in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi in a statement to the Associated Press, defending the decision.

Bondi’s words ring true -- trust in elections hinges on openness, something President Donald Trump has championed despite his own disputed claims about 2020 and mail voting. The DOJ, led by Harmeet Dhillon’s Civil Rights Division, is right to expand monitoring requests to other areas, ensuring no vote is tainted.
