Pentagon opens probe of Democrat senator over controversial video message

Brace yourselves for a political firestorm as the Pentagon targets a Democrat senator for daring to challenge military orders under President Donald Trump’s watch.

On Monday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth launched an investigation into Arizona Senator Mark Kelly for appearing in a video with five other Democratic lawmakers, urging troops to reject what they called unlawful directives, while Trump branded their actions as treasonous and demanded harsh punishment, as the Daily Mail reports.

Let’s start at the beginning: last week, Kelly, a retired Navy officer with over 20 years of service, joined a group of lawmakers with military and intelligence ties in a video message to servicemembers.

Hegseth Slams Lawmakers as Reckless Group

In that video, they advised military and intelligence personnel against following orders they deemed improper, a move Hegseth blasted as undermining discipline.

Hegseth took to social media, stating, “The video made by the ‘Seditious Six’ was despicable, reckless, and false,” as posted on X. With all due respect to differing opinions, telling troops to pick and choose orders in a public forum is a risky game -- discipline isn’t a suggestion, it’s the backbone of our armed forces.

Kelly, still subject to military law under the Uniform Code of Military Justice due to his retired status with recall potential, now faces a Pentagon review of his words and actions.

Trump Demands Severe Consequences for Actions

The other five lawmakers, Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, Reps. Jason Crow of Colorado, Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire, and Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, escaped scrutiny, as they’re no longer under military jurisdiction after their discharges.

Trump didn’t hold back, taking to Truth Social to call the lawmakers’ behavior “seditious” and even suggesting execution as a penalty for their stance.

Hegseth clarified that the Department of Defense is zeroing in on Kelly because he leveraged his rank and service history in the video, giving his words an air of official weight.

Kelly Stands Firm Against Intimidation Tactics

Kelly, for his part, pushed back hard against the investigation and Trump’s rhetoric, refusing to be cowed by what he sees as bullying tactics.

He told the Daily Mail, “If this is meant to intimidate me and other members of Congress from doing our jobs and holding this administration accountable, it won’t work.” Fair enough, Senator, but leaning on military credentials to sway active troops is a tightrope walk -- accountability shouldn’t mean sowing confusion in the ranks.

Democrats, including Kelly, didn’t pinpoint which orders they consider unlawful, though some in the party have questioned recent military strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean and Trump’s deployment of National Guard units to cities without state governors’ consent.

Political Rhetoric Heats Up on Both Sides

House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries and other party leaders condemned Trump’s harsh language, asserting that calls for violence in politics are unacceptable in America.

Kelly also called out Republican lawmakers for their silence on Trump’s threats, pointing out a shift from earlier pleas to tone down heated rhetoric just a couple of months ago.

Meanwhile, in the wake of conservative figure Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Republican voices have accused Democrats of stoking dangerous political hostility, arguing it creates a climate ripe for attacks on those on the right -- a reminder that words carry weight, no matter who is speaking.
