National Guard shooting suspect charged with murder in wake of soldier's death

Lorna Morales,
 November 28, 2025

Tragedy struck near the heart of our nation’s capital with a chilling ambush on two brave National Guard members.

In a targeted attack on Nov. 28, 2025, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, shot two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., killing one and leaving the other critically wounded, leading to a first-degree murder charge, as NewsNation reports.

This horrifying incident unfolded just blocks from the White House, though thankfully, President Donald Trump was not in residence at the time. The proximity to such a symbolic location raises serious questions about security in our capital.

Ambush Near Metro Station Shocks D.C.

The shooting, described by authorities as an ambush-style attack, occurred near a Metro station. Lakanwal reportedly rounded a corner and opened fire on Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe without hesitation.

Tragically, Spc. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries, a heartbreaking loss for her family and our nation. Staff Sgt. Wolfe remains in critical condition, fighting for his life after this unprovoked violence.

Other National Guard members swiftly responded, subduing Lakanwal at the scene. Their quick action likely prevented further carnage, showcasing the courage we expect from our service members.

Suspect’s Background Raises Policy Questions

Lakanwal, the suspect, is an Afghan national who once worked alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He served with a partner force in Kandahar until the U.S. withdrawal in 2021, even collaborating with the CIA.

He arrived in the U.S. through a Biden-era program designed to resettle Afghans who assisted American troops post-withdrawal. Later, he was granted asylum under the Trump administration, a decision now under scrutiny, given this violent outcome.

One must wonder if the vetting processes for such programs are robust enough to protect American lives. While compassion for allies is noble, national security must remain the priority over open-door policies.

Targeted Attack Crosses State Lines

Authorities revealed Lakanwal drove from his home in Washington state to D.C. to execute this targeted attack. The premeditation involved in crossing state lines adds a chilling layer to this crime.

As of Friday, the motive behind this heinous act remains under investigation. Without clear answers, speculation abounds, but the focus must stay on justice for the victims.

Lakanwal now faces severe charges, including first-degree murder, three counts of possessing a firearm during a violent crime, and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. These charges reflect the gravity of his actions.

President Trump Bolsters D.C. Security

In response to this tragedy, President Trump ordered the deployment of an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington, D.C. This decisive move underscores a commitment to safeguarding our capital from further threats.

While some may question the timing or necessity, this action sends a clear message: America will not cower in the face of violence. Strengthening security is a prudent step, not an overreaction.

As this case unfolds, the nation mourns Spc. Beckstrom and prays for Staff Sgt. Wolfe’s recovery. Let this serve as a reminder to honor those who serve while demanding accountability for those who betray our trust.
