Wisconsin judge returns 'Slender Man' stabber to psychiatric care

In a chilling reminder of a horrific 2014 crime, Morgan Geyser’s escape from supervision has landed her back in a state psychiatric hospital.

On Dec. 30, a Wisconsin judge ordered Geyser, convicted in the infamous Slender Man stabbing, to return to mental health confinement after her November 2025 escape from a group home, as Fox News reports.

Let’s rewind to 2014, when a shocking act of violence stunned Waukesha County. At just 12 years old, Morgan Geyser and her friend Anissa Weier lured Payton Leutner to a park during a sleepover. There, Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times while Weier urged her on.

Tracing the Horrific 2014 Stabbing Incident

Miraculously, Payton Leutner survived that brutal attack. Geyser and Weier later confessed their motive was to appease the fictional Slender Man character, believing failure to act would endanger their families. It’s a grim tale of delusion driving violence.

Fast forward to 2017, when both girls faced justice for their actions. They pleaded guilty to being party to attempted intentional homicide but were found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Mental confinement followed as their sentence.

Weier received a 25-year term in confinement, while Geyser was handed a 40-year sentence. For nearly eight years, Geyser remained at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. Her path seemed to shift with conditional release granted in January 2025.

Conditional Release and a Shocking Escape

But freedom proved fleeting for Geyser, now 23. On Nov. 22, she escaped from the YoYo Quality Care group home in Wisconsin. Her absence went unnoticed until the early hours of Nov. 23.

Later that same day, authorities located Geyser at a truck stop in Ill. alongside 43-year-old Chad Mecca. After extradition from Ill., she was detained at the Waukesha County Jail, raising questions about her placement.

Her attorney, Anthony Cotton, argued for a different setting. His plea to the court emphasized Geyser’s mental health needs over punitive measures. The argument carried a certain weight given her legal history.

Attorney’s Plea for Mental Health Placement

Here’s what Cotton conveyed in a letter to the judge. His position was clear and grounded in prior rulings. Listen to his reasoning on this matter.

“Given that she has no new criminal charges in Waukesha County and given that she has been previously found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect on the underlying offense, it is our position that she should be housed in a mental health facility, not a correctional institution," Cotton contended.

While Cotton’s point about mental health care over jail holds merit, conservatives might question if conditional release was premature for someone with such a violent past. Public safety must weigh heavily against rehabilitation experiments that risk further escapes.

Judge Revokes Release Amid Safety Concerns

On Dec. 30, Waukesha County Circuit Judge K. Scott Wagner made the call. He approved the state Department of Health Services’ request to revoke Geyser’s release privileges. She’s now ordered back to a psychiatric hospital.

This decision underscores a broader tension in our justice system. Balancing mental health treatment with accountability for grave acts isn’t simple. Yet, ensuring dangerous individuals don’t slip through oversight gaps remains paramount for community trust.

As this case echoes into 2026, it’s a sobering reminder of unresolved issues. How do we safeguard society while addressing mental illness in the justice system? For now, Geyser’s return to confinement prioritizes caution over leniency—a stance many will support.
