USDA Suspends Minnesota Funding Over Fraud Allegations

 January 10, 2026

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has taken decisive action against Minnesota, suspending federal financial awards on January 10, 2026, amid claims of massive fraud draining billions from taxpayer coffers.

On Friday, January 10, 2026, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced the immediate suspension of federal funding to Minnesota and Minneapolis due to allegations of widespread fraud involving billions of dollars, citing schemes like the $250 million Feeding Our Future scam.

This move follows reports of systemic issues in state oversight. Rollins demanded proof that fraudulent activities have ceased before restoring financial support.

Critics argue that this suspension highlights a critical failure in state leadership to safeguard federal resources. The decision by the Trump administration underscores a broader push to protect American taxpayers from misuse of public funds, as Breitbart reports. This issue has sparked intense debate over accountability in government programs.

Federal Action Targets Minnesota Fraud

Secretary Rollins issued a stern warning to Minnesota’s Democratic leaders on January 10, 2026. She emphasized that the Trump administration had uncovered extensive fraud in both Minnesota and Minneapolis, costing billions. The USDA’s immediate suspension of funds aims to halt further losses.

In a letter addressed to Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, D-Minn., Rollins pointed to specific fraudulent activities. Among them was the $250 million Feeding Our Future scheme, alongside alleged scams tied to the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program and daycare operations. These cases fueled the decision to act swiftly.

Rollins did not mince words in her public statement on social media. “Enough is enough! The Trump administration has uncovered MASSIVE fraud in Minnesota and Minneapolis—billions siphoned off by fraudsters. And those in charge have ZERO plan to fix it,” she declared, announcing the funding suspension.

State Leadership Under Fire

Rollins’ frustration with state oversight is a sentiment shared by many who prioritize fiscal responsibility. Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, the federal government is taking a stand against what appears to be unchecked mismanagement, raising questions about why Minnesota officials haven’t addressed these glaring issues sooner.

Further details in Rollins’ letter highlighted the depth of the problem. “While the full extent of fraud in Minnesota is not yet known, it is clear that, under your leadership — or lack thereof — fraudsters can take advantage of federal funds and the American taxpayer with impunity,” she wrote. This necessitated federal intervention to safeguard resources.

Such pointed criticism of state governance reflects a broader concern about accountability. When billions are siphoned off, as Rollins alleges, it’s the hardworking American taxpayer who bears the burden. One must wonder how long this could have continued without federal scrutiny under President Trump’s watch.

Additional Voices Raise Concerns

Concerns about fraud in Minnesota surfaced earlier, with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz speaking out in December 2025. “Minnesota authorities needed to be investigated over alleged fraud, stating that it was a ‘clear dereliction of duty,’” Oz noted. His warning hinted at potential funding cuts if issues persisted.

Oz’s call for investigation aligns with the USDA’s current stance, yet it’s telling that state leaders seemed unprepared for such consequences. If fraud is indeed systemic, as alleged, then federal agencies under President Trump are right to demand answers and impose strict measures until trust is restored.

Adding to the narrative, citizen journalist Nick Shirley and his team claimed to have exposed over $110 million in fraudulent activities in a single day. Their findings pointed to fake daycares and healthcare groups, specifically linked to Minnesota’s Somali community, as sources of concern. Shirley urged accountability for officials and fraudsters alike.

Political Pushback and Accountability Debate

In response, Gov. Walz dismissed Shirley as a “far-right YouTuber” and “delusional conspiracy theorist.” Such a retort, however, sidesteps the substantive allegations of fraud that both federal officials and independent investigators have raised. Dismissing critics hardly resolves the underlying fiscal crisis at hand.

The scale of the alleged fraud—billions of dollars, per Rollins—demands serious attention, not deflection. President Trump’s administration has made it clear that protecting taxpayer money is non-negotiable, and Minnesota must provide concrete evidence of reform before federal trust, and funding, can be reinstated.

As this situation unfolds, the USDA’s suspension serves as a wake-up call for states handling federal resources. Accountability must trump political posturing if public confidence is to be maintained. Under President Trump’s guidance, the message is clear: no more handouts without oversight.
