House Freedom Caucus Backs Insurrection Act Use in Minnesota

In a bold move, House Freedom Caucus Republicans have urged President Donald Trump to consider invoking the Insurrection Act to address ongoing protests in Minnesota over federal immigration enforcement.

On Tuesday, the conservative bloc expressed support for deploying U.S. military forces in Minnesota to quell unrest against immigration operations, while also advocating for a sustained federal law enforcement presence despite bipartisan criticism over recent fatal shootings by agents.

Freedom Caucus Supports Military Deployment

According to Courthouse News Service, the House Freedom Caucus, in a letter dated Tuesday, informed President Trump of their backing if he chooses to use the 1807 Insurrection Act. This law permits the deployment of military forces domestically to suppress civil disorder. Their stance comes amid weeks of protests in Minneapolis and across Minnesota.

These protests target the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, during which federal agents have detained dozens identified by the White House as criminals or unauthorized migrants. Public frustration escalated this month after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good, 37, in her car. The Department of Homeland Security called it self-defense.

More recently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers shot Alex Pretti, 37, multiple times after subduing him. This incident, occurring just days ago, has fueled bipartisan calls for accountability. Yet, the Freedom Caucus pushes for stronger measures against what they term coordinated disruptions.

Bipartisan Criticism and Federal Response

The issue has sparked intense debate across party lines. While some Republicans join Democrats in questioning the Homeland Security Department’s actions, the Freedom Caucus doubles down on endorsing federal authority. Their letter blames local politicians for fostering chaos, leading to two American deaths in Minnesota.

House Freedom Caucus stated, “The coordinated effort to stop law enforcement by politicians in Minnesota and around the country has caused chaos and led to the tragic deaths of two Americans in Minnesota. It must end.”

Such strong wording underscores their position, but it sidesteps the complexity of federal use of force. While protecting law enforcement’s role is vital under President Trump’s leadership, accountability for lethal actions must not be dismissed as mere political obstruction.

Trump’s Evolving Stance on Minnesota

President Trump has previously threatened via social media this month to invoke the Insurrection Act, criticizing Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over protests he linked to professional agitators. However, his tone shifted after Pretti’s death over the weekend. He has withheld full support for the involved agents.

On Monday, Trump spoke with Walz, noting they seemed aligned in perspective. He also mentioned Walz’s positive reaction to border czar Tom Homan’s dispatch to Minnesota. Separately, Trump reported progress after discussions with Frey, with Homan scheduled to meet both leaders on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday afternoon, Trump avoided endorsing the Border Patrol’s actions in Pretti’s shooting, awaiting investigation results. He later remarked that Pretti, a licensed handgun carrier, shouldn’t have been armed despite Minnesota’s open-carry laws for permit holders. Video evidence suggests agents disarmed Pretti before the fatal shots.

Funding Battles and Future Hearings

President Donald Trump said, “You can’t have guns. You can’t walk in with guns. You just can’t.”

This statement raises eyebrows, given state laws and Pretti’s legal status as a carrier. Under President Trump’s administration, balancing Second Amendment rights with public safety remains a tightrope, especially when federal actions lead to such tragic outcomes.

Meanwhile, the Freedom Caucus urges full funding for Homeland Security as Senate appropriations loom, opposing Democratic efforts to impose restrictions on ICE. They support drastic steps such as ending the filibuster or unilaterally shifting funds. As hearings approach, with officials testifying next month and Secretary Kristi Noem on March 3, clarity on these policies is crucial.
