Advancement in DNA tech could help solve JonBenét Ramsey case, victim's father says

The decades-old murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a six-year-old beauty pageant contestant, could soon see a breakthrough thanks to evolving DNA technologies.

John Ramsey, JonBenét's father, is urging Boulder, Colorado authorities to employ contemporary genome sequencing methods to crack the cold case, the U.S. Sun reported.

JonBenét was found murdered in her home's basement on Dec. 26, 1996. Her tragic death came after her mother, Patsy Ramsey, found a ransom note the same morning. Despite intensive investigations, her killer remains free, elevating the complexity of the mystery surrounding her death.

John Ramsey touts new DNA tech

John Ramsey discovered his daughter’s body, a process that revealed she was strangled, sexually assaulted, and beaten. Subsequent investigations cleared the Ramsey family as suspects in 2008, as DNA analysis identified the presence of an unknown male on JonBenét's clothing and under her nails.

Believing new DNA technologies hold promise, John is advocating for the use of advanced genome sequencing. Inspired by the recent developments in the Gilgo Beach murder trial, he envisions unidentified hair samples from JonBenét’s crime scene being pivotal.

“It’s a huge advance, and I believe it’s the way our case will be solved,” expressed John Ramsey. He remains firm in his convictions that new methodologies offer a "really good chance (it) could be solved if it’s implemented."

Drawing parallels to Gilgo Beach case

Rex Heuermann's link to multiple killings over two decades was established through cutting-edge DNA profiling, galvanizing the Ramsey family’s hope for similar resolution in their case.

The technique, effectively employed to unveil Heuermann's guilt, heightened John’s awareness of what might now be possible for his daughter's case.

John's determination has led to January and September meetings with Boulder law enforcement. He consistently champions the idea of deploying the new DNA methods to reassess hair samples from the crime scene, which had previously gone unidentified.

"I have another meeting set up with the chief of police. That’s my message: We’ve got to use this technique. I firmly believe that it’ll solve the case." John Ramsey emphasized amid his ongoing crusade.

"Suppose they now use cutting-edge DNA labs to develop a DNA profile in the proper format for familial genealogy research. In that case, we have pretty good odds of finding the killer’s identity," he added.

Continuing the fight for justice

For twelve years, John and his late wife, Patsy Ramsey, were etched in the public eye as potential suspects. Their eventual exoneration came only after genomic science began to unpeel the faint traces left by the real perpetrator.

Former detective Lou Smit's faith that DNA technology would ultimately solve the case seems to resonate in John Ramsey's current efforts. Public advocating by John, including media appearances such as on Netflix, has fueled new leads and tips into Boulder police channels.

The Ramsey patriarch acknowledges the enduring battle they have faced: “Life’s not fair. You’ve just got to accept that. You have to keep fighting. That’s an image I keep remembering during all of this.”

Ultimately, John Ramsey's plea to modernize the investigative approach reflects a broader societal hope to leverage science in bringing long-sought justice. His dedication serves as a resolute reminder of an enduring quest -- to both solve a haunting mystery and provide closure for a family, a community, and beyond.
