Bill Clinton tells House Oversight he knew nothing about Epstein's crimes as Clintons' ties to Maxwell face new scrutiny

Former President Bill Clinton claimed before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that he had "no idea" about the criminal conduct of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, going so far as to post images of his opening statement on X in what appeared to be a preemptive bid to control the narrative.

Clinton's testimony landed just one day after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the House Oversight Committee she similarly "had no idea about" Epstein's criminal activities and could "not recall ever encountering Mr. Epstein." She also claimed she "never flew on his plane or visited his island home or offices."

Both Clintons, in other words, want the American public to believe they were entirely in the dark about the man whose orbit they occupied for years.

Clinton's carefully worded defense

In his opening statement, Bill Clinton leaned hard on biography to bolster credibility, telling the committee:

"As someone who grew up in a home with domestic abuse, not only would I not have flown on his plane if I had any inkling of what he was doing — I would have turned him in myself and led the call for justice for his crimes, not sweetheart deals."

He then attempted to dismiss the significance of photographs connecting him to Epstein's circle, stating in testimony:

"No matter how many photos you show me, I have two things that at the end of the day matter more than your interpretation of those 20-year-old photos. I know what I saw, and more importantly, what I didn't see. I know what I did, and more importantly, what I didn't do."

Clinton also claimed Epstein hid his crimes "from everyone so well for so long" and that by the time those crimes "came to light with his 2008 guilty plea," he had "long stopped associating with him."

That timeline deserves close examination. Epstein entered a guilty plea in 2008. But Breitbart reports that Clinton took four international trips on Epstein's plane in 2002 and 2003, according to public flight logs. That is not a casual acquaintance. That is sustained, repeated travel on the private aircraft of a man who was, during that same period, allegedly engaged in the conduct that would later produce criminal charges.

The Maxwell problem the Clintons cannot explain away

The Clintons' denials collide with a stubborn set of facts involving Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former assistant, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Breitbart News reporter Sean Moran reported in February that the Epstein files detail Maxwell's "integral role in supporting the creation of the Clinton Global Initiative." According to that reporting, Maxwell participated in budget discussions for the first CGI conference, coordinated with Clinton aides, and worked with Publicis Groupe, the company that produced CGI's first event.

Maxwell herself, in a 2025 Department of Justice interview, said she had a "very central" role in setting up the Clinton Global Initiative and that Epstein was involved in the effort. She also characterized the former president as her friend, "not Epstein's friend," according to the New York Times.

Hillary Clinton recently said she had met Maxwell "on a few occasions," a phrasing designed to minimize the relationship. But Maxwell has been reported to have attended Chelsea Clinton's wedding, a detail that suggests something more than passing acquaintance.

A donor relationship that spans decades

The financial ties between the Clintons and Epstein stretch back to the earliest days of the Clinton political operation.

The New York Times reported that Epstein, described as a Democratic donor, supported Bill Clinton's 1992 political campaign and Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign in 1999. The New York Times also reported that Epstein visited the White House a number of times during the Clinton administration.

The Department of Justice has released documents and photos related to Epstein in which the former president has been reported to be featured. The full scope and content of those materials have not been publicly detailed.

What investigators must still determine

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the full extent of communication between the Clintons and either Epstein or Maxwell during the years in question. Investigators will need to determine whether the Clintons' claimed ignorance is consistent with the documentary record, including flight logs, communications referenced in the Epstein files, and the details of Maxwell's involvement in the Clinton Global Initiative. The committee has not publicly announced further scheduled testimony or hearings related to these matters.

A former president who flew on a convicted sex offender's plane at least four times, whose signature charitable initiative was built with the "very central" help of that offender's convicted accomplice, and whose political campaigns accepted that offender's money now asks the country to believe he noticed nothing.

The House Oversight Committee owes the public a full accounting of whether that claim holds up under the weight of the evidence already in the record.
