Federal Probe Targets Partner in Minneapolis ICE Shooting

 January 18, 2026

Federal officials have launched an investigation into Becca Good, partner of Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, raising questions about accountability and federal priorities.

On Jan. 18, 2026, sources revealed that federal officials are investigating Becca Good for possibly impeding a federal officer before Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good last week during an immigration operation in Minneapolis, while the Justice Department also probes Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for allegedly hindering federal agents through public statements. The shooting has ignited protests and demands for scrutiny of ICE tactics. At least 10 other shootings by immigration officers have occurred since September.

The issue has sparked intense debate over the direction of federal law enforcement. While local leaders decry perceived overreach, the administration appears focused on curbing potential threats to officers. This clash highlights deeper tensions over immigration enforcement and public safety.

Federal Focus Shifts to Becca Good

According to two individuals familiar with the probe, the investigation centers more on Becca Good’s actions and her possible connections to activist groups than on Ross’ decision to fire into Renee Good’s vehicle. The inquiry examines whether Becca violated laws related to obstructing federal officers. Video footage shows Becca appearing to urge Renee to drive away before shots were fired, as NBC News reports.

Becca Good’s attorney, Antonio Romanucci, stated there has been no official notice of an investigation into his client. The Justice Department offered no comment on Becca Good’s case. Meanwhile, internal Department of Homeland Security reviews of the shooting are underway, though Minneapolis officials question their impartiality.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the officer, asserting after the incident that the vehicle was wielded as a weapon and Ross acted in self-defense. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche added there is currently no grounds for a criminal civil rights probe into Ross. This stance contrasts sharply with local perspectives.

Justice Department Targets State Officials

In a parallel effort, the Justice Department is scrutinizing Gov. Walz and Mayor Frey under a theory that their public criticisms of ICE tactics obstructed federal immigration efforts. A senior law enforcement official and another source confirmed this probe. Both Democratic leaders have called the investigation politically motivated.

“The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her,” Walz said.

Walz’s frustration is noted, but federal authorities might argue that public statements undermining enforcement efforts can embolden resistance. If rhetoric risks officer safety, shouldn’t accountability extend beyond the trigger?

Frey has similarly declared he won’t be intimidated by federal actions. The Justice Department declined comment on the probes into Walz and Frey. Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel affirmed agents are in Minneapolis targeting violent unrest and related funding networks.

Broader Policy Shifts Under Scrutiny

These investigations align with a December memo from Attorney General Pam Bondi prioritizing action against “domestic terrorism,” including groups promoting violence under anti-fascist banners. President Donald Trump, the current president of the United States, labeled Renee and Becca Good as “professional agitators” last week, though without supporting evidence. Noem echoed this by branding Renee’s actions as “domestic terrorism.”

Agents were in Minneapolis “cracking down on violent rioters and investigating the funding networks supporting criminal actors with multiple arrests already,” Patel stated.

Patel’s focus on criminal networks suggests a necessary crackdown on organized unrest, though one wonders if broad labels risk casting too wide a net. Precision in targeting actual threats must remain paramount.

At the same time, the Justice Department has stepped back from policing accountability, shuttering civil rights probes into departments like Minneapolis PD. Legal analysts warn that vague “domestic terrorism” classifications could overreach, potentially sweeping up unrelated protestors. Local officials also report being excluded from the federal shooting inquiry.

Local and Internal Fallout Continues

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty is independently gathering evidence to assess possible criminal charges against Ross, launching a public portal for submissions and seeking state reports. The federal probe’s handling has led to internal turmoil, with six Minneapolis federal prosecutors resigning over case management concerns. Former prosecutor David Kelley termed this the “darkest day” for federal law enforcement.

Video evidence from the incident captures Renee Good speaking calmly before the situation escalated, with another officer directing her to exit the vehicle. Becca and Renee were partners but not legally married, per their attorney’s spokesperson, despite Becca previously referring to Renee as her wife. This tragic event continues to fuel public outrage.

As federal priorities shift toward perceived threats over officer accountability, the divide between local and national authorities deepens. This case may shape future immigration enforcement and protest responses. Americans deserve a system that balances officer safety with transparent justice, without political overtones clouding the truth.
