Former Rep. George Santos says he is fleeing NYC over Mamdani's mayoral win

New York City finally tipped into uncharted socialist territory? This week, disgraced former Congressman George Santos declared he’s fleeing the Big Apple after the election of Zohran Mamdani, a mayor he deems a dangerous harbinger of “evil.”

This story captures Santos’ dramatic exit from NYC after 37 years, driven by Mamdani’s mayoral victory with 50.4% of the vote, which he blames on vote-splitting by Republican Curtis Sliwa, as the New York Post reports.

The seeds of Santos’ departure were sown even before the election results rolled in. He had hinted at leaving the city he’s called home for nearly four decades. The confirmation of Mamdani’s win was the final push.

Santos Decries Dangers of Socialist Leadership

Soon after Mamdani’s victory was confirmed, Santos took to X with a scathing video message. He expressed dismay at the direction NYC is heading under a socialist mayor. His words carried a tone of finality.

Having resided in NYC for 37 years, Santos made it clear he’s done. He voiced concerns about the city becoming “a very dangerous place to live.” This risk, he noted, is intolerable as he plans to start a family.

Santos didn’t shy away from pointing fingers at the election outcome. He accused Republican candidate Sliwa of fracturing the conservative vote, thus paving the way for Mamdani’s triumph. Sliwa, he argued, should have stepped aside to unify support.

Vote Split Hands Victory to Mamdani

The numbers tell a stark story of division. Mamdani clinched the mayoral race with 50.4% of the vote, while independent candidate and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo garnered 41.6%. Sliwa trailed far behind with just 7.1%.

Santos didn’t spare Cuomo from criticism, labeling him a deeply flawed figure and a disappointing human being. Yet, he admitted a preference for Cuomo over the unknown perils of Mamdani’s agenda. Familiar challenges, it seems, trump untested ideologies.

Reflecting on his own tumultuous past, Santos acknowledged his legal troubles, including a prison stint for donor scams and identity theft before receiving a pardon. His controversial history adds layers to his outspoken critique. Yet, his focus remains on NYC’s future.

Santos’ Farewell Blasts Political Missteps

In his video, Santos delivered a pointed farewell to the city he once represented. He said, “Good luck, New York. It was nice knowing you.”

Isn’t it telling that even a figure as polarizing as Santos sees the folly in progressive overreach under Mamdani? With President Donald Trump at the helm, shouldn’t we prioritize leaders who unify rather than divide through radical policies?

He doubled down, stating, “After 37 years, I’m out. I’d rather the evil I know than the evil I don’t want to know.”

Conservative Hopes Dashed by Division

Such stark language underscores Santos’ dread of Mamdani’s leadership. But isn’t there irony in conservatives losing ground due to their own inability to consolidate? Sliwa’s refusal to withdraw, as Santos suggested, handed victory to the left.

Santos’ exit is more than a personal decision; it’s a warning bell for conservatives nationwide. Under Donald Trump’s leadership, we must rally against socialist trends creeping into urban strongholds. NYC’s fate could be a harbinger for others.

As Santos packs up, his critique of political greed and delusion lingers. Will conservatives learn from this split-vote debacle, or will progressive agendas continue to exploit our divisions? The answer may shape cities far beyond NYC’s borders.
