Imagine foreign billionaires secretly shaping American elections -- sounds like a dystopian thriller, right? Yet, this is the alarming reality Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) and fellow Republicans are tackling head-on. Their bold new bill aims to slam the door on such interference.
This week, Hagerty, alongside seven Republican senators, introduced the Preventing Foreign Interference in American Elections Act to stop foreign nationals from funding activities influencing U.S. elections through loopholes and intermediaries, as the New York Post reports.
Joined by Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Ted Budd (R-NC), Ted Cruz (R-TX), John Kennedy (R-LA), Mike Lee (R-UT), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), and Roger Marshall (R-KS), Hagerty unveiled this critical legislation. It’s a direct response to a growing threat. American elections, they argue, must remain American.
Under current law, foreign nationals are already barred from donating to federal, state, or local campaigns. However, some have sidestepped this by funneling money through intermediaries. These funds often support efforts like get-out-the-vote drives, subtly swaying outcomes.
The Preventing Foreign Interference in American Elections Act seeks to end these workarounds. It explicitly prohibits foreign contributions to activities such as ballot initiatives, harvesting, and public messaging for political parties. This is a much-needed tightening of the rules.
Moreover, the bill blocks donations to intermediary groups that redirect funds to election-related causes. It’s a comprehensive approach to safeguard democracy. After all, shouldn’t the voice of the American voter be the only one that counts?
To balance enforcement, the legislation includes protections against overly aggressive federal probes. A process allows challenges to subpoenas if bias is suspected. This ensures the law targets real threats without becoming a political weapon.
Hagerty isn’t new to this fight; he introduced a similar bill last year, though specifics on timing remain unclear. His persistence shows a deep concern for electoral integrity. It’s a cause that resonates with many frustrated by outside meddling.
On the same day as the bill’s rollout, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers took action. He filed a lawsuit against Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and six associated groups. Their funds allegedly supported ballot initiative committees, raising serious red flags.
Hagerty pointed to Wyss, whose Berger Action Fund, tied to the Wyss Foundation, has poured over $280 million into the liberal Sixteen Thirty Fund. Also known as Families Over Billionaires, this group pushes hard against conservative policies. It’s a glaring example of foreign influence.
Specifically, Families Over Billionaires has deployed media campaigns, rapid responses, and grassroots efforts to oppose President Trump’s key initiatives, like the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Such actions directly challenge the agenda Americans voted for. How is this not a breach of sovereignty?
“After years of hysteria over Russiagate and alleged foreign influence in American elections, it turns out Democrats have recently benefited from hundreds of millions of dollars in election-related contributions from a shadowy foreign billionaire,” Hagerty said. Isn’t it ironic that those loudest about interference seem to quietly cash the checks?
“This type of influence undermines democracy and self-government here in America, and its staggering scope should be alarming,” Hagerty added. “This legislation will put an end to covert foreign influence on our elections and protect Americans’ voice in electing their leaders.” His words cut to the core of why this matters.
Let’s be clear: if foreign money can sway ballot measures or voter turnout, it’s not just a loophole -- it’s a hijacking of our process. Hagerty’s bill is a firewall we desperately need. Progressive agendas shouldn’t be bankrolled by overseas tycoons.
Support for this cause extends beyond the Senate, as House Committee on Administration chair Bryan Steil (R-WI) plans to introduce a companion bill. While the timeline remains undecided, his commitment signals broader Republican resolve. Together, they’re fighting to keep American elections truly American.
