Legendary TN sheriff implicated in decades-old murder case

A fresh examination of a homicide case from 1967 has unearthed startling revelations about icons of law and order.

According to CBS News, investigators now believe legendary Tennessee sheriff Buford Pusser was responsible for the death of his wife, Pauline Mullins Pusser, contrary to his own narrative that she was slain by adversaries.

The cold case, reexamined in 2022 by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, has captured public interest. Initially reported as a tragic ambush by Buford Pusser, the case now shows a different reality -- a history of domestic violence and conflicting evidence. The new investigation points to physical evidence that contradicts Pusser's original claims.

Evidence found in autopsy, photos

An analysis of Pauline's autopsy and crime scene photos led investigators to challenge previous beliefs. Authorities found that Pauline had been shot outside and then positioned in the vehicle.

Cleansed of any preconceived ideas and focused on evidence, the investigation managed to piece together crucial aspects of the incident.

Blood spatter analysis shed further light on inconsistencies in Pusser's story, hinting at alleged self-infliction of his gunshot wound.

While Pusser suggested attackers were to blame, evidence points to a narrative less fitting of Hollywood heroism. Investigators faced a delicate balance between cold, hard facts and the enduring legacy Pusser left behind.

Evidence of previous domestic violence emerged, revealing a history more sinister than the public image projected by Buford Pusser. Signs such as a healed broken nose further complicated his heroic persona.

District attorney seeks justice for victim

District attorney Mark Davidson defended the effort to reexamine the notorious case, stressing that it was not an attack on Pusser's character but rather an essential journey for truth and closure. "This case is not about tearing down a legend. It is about giving dignity and closure to Pauline and her family and ensuring that the truth is not buried with time," Davidson remarked.

Still, the granddaughter of Buford Pusser condemned the recent revelations, describing the accusations as unfounded and suggesting they were unfair to someone who cannot defend himself. The intergenerational impact of this disclosure is palpable as families and historians must unravel a deeply rooted mythos.

Historical impact of new findings

The recent surfacing of these findings also cast a spotlight on the storied legacy of Buford Pusser, notably portrayed as the protagonist in the 1973 movie, "Walking Tall." Even in fictional representations, elements were left ambiguous regarding his turbulent marriage and eventual tragic loss.

Through it all, family members like Pauline’s brother, Griffon Mullins, express complicated emotions of relief and pain. "You would fall in love with her because she was a people person. And of course, my family would always go to Pauline if they had an issue or they needed some advice and she was always there for them," Mullins shared.

The expansive case file, exceeding 1,000 pages and filled with redactions, awaits its release at the University of Tennessee at Martin. As the public sifts through these records, hopes are for more clarity and understanding of this decades-old tragedy.

Reflecting on Buford Pusser's life, which ended in a car crash in August 1974, one cannot overlook the lingering questions left behind. As the legend's story unravels, the revelation has sent shockwaves across Tennessee and beyond.

This investigation has peeled back layers of myth, shaking the enduring narrative of a supposed underdog sheriff. The road to truth remains long and complex.
