Minnesota Officials Subpoenaed by FBI Over ICE Obstruction Allegations

Lorna Morales,
 January 20, 2026

In a striking development out of Minnesota, the FBI has issued grand jury subpoenas to top state officials, alleging interference with federal immigration enforcement efforts. The action targets Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, amid heightened tensions in the Twin Cities.

The subpoenas, delivered as reported on Jan. 20, 2026, are linked to a federal probe into claims that these leaders conspired to obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations during the Department of Homeland Security’s “Operation Metro Surge,” the largest such initiative in Minnesota’s history, involving roughly 3,000 agents from multiple agencies. This sweeping operation has fueled ongoing anti-ICE protests across the Twin Cities, intensifying nearly two weeks after an agent shot Renee Good, who reportedly clipped him with her SUV.

Federal Investigation Targets State Leadership

The issue has sparked intense debate over the balance between state authority and federal law enforcement priorities. Critics of Walz, Ellison, and Frey argue that their outspoken opposition to ICE’s presence undermines national security and the rule of law, as the New York Post reported.

According to FOX reports, the officials are accused of conspiring to hinder ICE activities in Minnesota. The subpoenas specifically seek “records and communications” to substantiate these allegations. Walz’s office confirmed to FOX 9 that a subpoena was indeed received.

Per FOX News, the request focuses on “records and communications” tied to the officials’ actions. It’s troubling to consider that elected leaders might prioritize political posturing over cooperation with federal agents tasked with enforcing immigration laws.

Operation Metro Surge Sparks Controversy

The federal investigation centers on what has been described as “an alleged conspiracy to coerce or obstruct federal law enforcement operations during the Department of Homeland Security’s Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota.” This wording suggests a deliberate effort to impede DHS efforts, a serious charge against public officials.

Such accusations raise questions about whether state leaders are overstepping their bounds in opposing federal policy. If proven, this could set a dangerous precedent for other progressive-leaning states to defy national directives under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Operation Metro Surge, overseen by the Department of Homeland Security, includes agents from ICE, Customs and Border Protection, and Homeland Security Investigations. Described by DHS as the largest operation of its kind in Minnesota history, it underscores the federal commitment to addressing unauthorized migration.

Anti-ICE Protests Fuel Tensions

The backdrop to this legal clash includes ongoing anti-ICE protests in the Twin Cities, erupting nearly two weeks after the shooting of Renee Good by an agent. Reports indicate Good struck the agent with her SUV, a detail often downplayed by critics of federal enforcement.

While the incident involving Good is tragic, it highlights the volatile environment federal agents face. Opponents of ICE must weigh whether their rhetoric contributes to such dangerous encounters on Minnesota’s streets.

Walz, Ellison, and Frey have been vocal critics of immigration enforcement, publicly demanding that ICE leave the state. Their statements, sometimes described as loud and even profane, have drawn sharp criticism from those who support stronger border security measures.

State Defiance Under Scrutiny

This defiance appears to clash with the federal government’s mandate under President Trump to prioritize law and order. It’s ironic that leaders championing progressive agendas seem quick to dismiss the legal framework they’re sworn to uphold when it suits their narrative.

The FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Post, leaving some questions unanswered. Yet, the issuance of subpoenas alone signals that federal authorities are taking these allegations with utmost seriousness.

As this investigation unfolds, it will likely become a flashpoint in the broader national debate over immigration policy. Minnesota’s case could test the limits of state resistance to federal authority, especially under a presidency committed to stringent enforcement.
