New York assemblyman criticized for giving 9/11 memorial pen to ex-al Qaeda detainee's lawyer

New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (D-Queens) faces mounting criticism after it was revealed he handed a symbolic 9/11 memorial pen to a lawyer who previously defended an alleged al Qaeda operative. The gesture, which took place during a legislative session, has sparked outrage among 9/11 victims’ families and political opponents who say the act dishonors the memory of those killed in the terrorist attacks.

Assemblyman’s gesture draws calls for accountability

According to Fox News reporting, Mamdani gave the ceremonial pen, customarily used to commemorate the signing of a 9/11 tribute resolution, to attorney Alka Pradhan. Pradhan previously represented Ammar al-Baluchi, a detainee at Guantanamo Bay accused of involvement in the September 11 attacks.

The pen is traditionally a symbol of remembrance for those lost in the attacks, and its transfer to Pradhan has drawn sharp rebuke. Patricia Casazza, a member of the 9/11 Families United group, declared the move a “slap in the face” to victims and their relatives. “It’s a slap in the face to every family member who lost someone that day,” she said.

Victims’ families and critics demand answers

Casazza and other family members of 9/11 victims have demanded that Mamdani explain his actions and issue a formal apology. Critics argue that the assemblyman’s gesture undermines the annual resolution, which honors first responders and victims of the attacks.

Mamdani defended his decision, stating that Pradhan’s work as a defense attorney has centered on “human rights and due process.” He added that the pen was given to recognize her legal advocacy, not to condone terrorism.

Legal and political fallout

Some New York lawmakers have called for an investigation into the incident. While no formal proceedings or disciplinary actions have been reported, critics argue that the act raises questions about judgment and priorities when it comes to honoring national tragedies.

Pradhan has not commented publicly on receiving the pen, and authorities have not announced any official review of Mamdani’s conduct. Investigators have not said whether the gesture violated any legislative rules or state protocols.

What remains unclear

Authorities have not confirmed whether Mamdani faces any internal discipline or whether the state assembly will revisit its procedures for distributing memorial items. Investigators will need to determine if further action is warranted to address concerns raised by victims’ groups and lawmakers.

The controversy has put a spotlight on how public officials commemorate national tragedies and who is chosen to receive symbolic honors. For many, the episode has revived painful memories and debates about the balance between legal advocacy and respect for victims.

In the end, the law, and the public, expect clear lines when it comes to honoring those lost to terror, not blurred symbols passed for political theater. The memory of 9/11 deserves better.
