Sacramento ABC station shooting suspect was recently flagged for 'violent' speech: Report

A shocking act of violence unfolded in downtown Sacramento on Friday of last week, when gunfire targeted ABC10, a local ABC-affiliate station. At least three shots pierced a window of the building, leaving glass shattered but thankfully no injuries, as CBS Sacramento reports. This disturbing event has raised alarms about political extremism, of which the assailant was recently accused.

The incident occurred early that morning, following days of online vitriol from the accused, Anibal Hernandez Santana. Social media posts linked to him criticized the Trump administration and conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with one post flagged by X for violent content on Sept. 16.

Just a day before the shooting, a protest erupted outside ABC10 over the network’s suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. His temporary sidelining, due to comments about Kirk’s killing, ended on Tuesday. Could the suspension have fueled the shooter’s rage?

Disturbing prelude to shooting

On the morning of the attack, Hernandez Santana posted on X, labeling a video about Kirk as “blasphemy.” It was his sole post that day, a chilling hint of the chaos to follow. Hours later, bullets struck the station, shattering the calm of a routine day.

Following the shooting, authorities discovered handwritten notes in Hernandez Santana’s car expressing disdain for Trump administration officials, ominously warning “they’re next.” Another message, found at his home and dated Sept. 19, read, “do the next scary thing.” These clues paint a troubling picture.

Over the weekend, the FBI arrested Hernandez Santana after he posted bail on local charges, a swift move to contain the threat. By Monday, he stood before a federal judge for the first time. He remains in custody, with a court date set for Thursday.

Federal charges follow swift arrest

Sacramento County District Attorney Thein Ho confirmed on Sept. 22 that evidence points to a politically driven motive. While the precise reasons remain under investigation, a connection to Kimmel’s suspension is being explored. The timing of these events is hard to ignore.

Hernandez Santana’s online presence offers further insight, with his X bio claiming roles as a health lawyer, policy advisor, and veteran. Yet, his posts reveal a fixation on political grievances, though nothing directly tied to Kimmel’s situation. What pushed him from rhetoric to alleged violence?

Delving into his past, records show Hernandez Santana lobbied for the California Catholic Conference from 2001 to 2008 and later for the California Federation of Teachers from 2013 until early 2015. This professional history contrasts sharply with his current legal predicament. He has yet to enter a plea.

Unpacking suspect's political background

“Posting, exhibiting hyper-partisan behavior, strongly polarizing partisan behavior, is a risk factor for committing violence. On the other hand, the vast majority of people who exhibit hyper-partisan behavior do not commit violence,” said Dr. Garen Wintemute.

Isn’t it telling that hyper-partisan rhetoric, often amplified by progressive agendas, can spiral into such acts? Under President Donald Trump, the nation has seen how divisive narratives can stoke unrest, yet accountability seems to dodge those fanning the flames.

A recent UC Davis study links various forms of prejudice to support for political violence. While sometimes tied to extreme conservative views, this case suggests left-leaning radicalism may also play a role. The balance of threats appears ever-shifting.

Broader implications unclear

As investigators probe deeper, the nation watches a familiar pattern of ideology-driven hostility unfold. President Donald Trump’s administration continues to face criticism that sometimes veers into dangerous territory. Must every policy disagreement now risk escalating to gunfire?

“Maybe somebody in this man's social network, whether on social media or in person, heard, you know something's not quite so right now. When that happens, we need to be willing to contact the authorities so that they can take action to prevent an act of violence from occurring,” said Wintemute.

Indeed, vigilance is key, yet one wonders why social media platforms, quick to flag posts, don’t do more to curb radicalization before bullets fly. Under President Trump’s leadership, it’s time to demand real solutions to protect our communities from such senseless acts.
