Trump Confirms DOJ, Congress Probe Into Omar's Finances

Lorna Morales,
 January 26, 2026

On Monday, Donald Trump announced a significant investigation targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) over her rapidly increasing net worth.

He later confirmed that the Department of Justice and Congress are scrutinizing Omar’s finances, along with her husband, Tim Mynett, following reports that House Republicans had initiated a review of their business dealings. The announcement came after Trump dispatched border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota to address tensions from the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by a federal immigration officer.

Investigations Target Omar's Wealth Surge

The issue has sparked debate among lawmakers and the public, with many questioning how Omar, who arrived in the U.S. as a refugee, amassed such wealth. Trump, 79, noted that Minnesota is already under investigation for what he termed “welfare fraud,” adding another layer of scrutiny to the state.

According to Trump’s statement on Jan. 26, Omar, 43, came from Somalia with minimal resources and is now reportedly worth tens of millions, as per her congressional financial disclosures. He further claimed in a post that her net worth may exceed $44 million.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has indicated his panel is considering a subpoena for Omar and Mynett, who jointly own their businesses. Comer anticipates strong legal resistance from the couple as investigators seek answers about the sudden increase in their assets, the New York Post reported.

Financial Disclosures Raise Eyebrows

Court filings from a South Dakota lawsuit against a related company reveal that Mynett’s investment firm, Rose Lake Capital, had just $42.44 in its account as of 2022. Yet, Omar’s 2024 House financial disclosures list the firm’s value at up to $25 million.

Interestingly, Omar has not disclosed a personal stake in Rose Lake Capital, though congressional rules require listing spouses’ assets. Additional filings show Mynett’s past ventures, including a winery and a pot farm, which he has since abandoned, bringing his total net worth to an estimated range of $6 million to $30 million.

A Rose Lake spokesman stated that Mynett earned less than $20,000 in 2024 from his stakes in various companies, in contrast to the high asset values reported in disclosures. This discrepancy fuels questions about the true source of the couple’s wealth.

Trump and Omar Clash Publicly

Trump’s history of sharp criticism toward Omar includes past calls for her to be jailed or deported to Somalia, her country of birth. Her family fled Somalia during its civil war, ongoing since 1991, finding refuge in Kenya before gaining asylum in the U.S., arriving in Arlington, Va., and later moving to Minneapolis in 1997.

Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000 and has since risen to prominence as a progressive voice in Congress. Responding to Trump’s latest comments, she dismissed the investigations as baseless:

Sorry, Trump, your support is collapsing and you’re panicking. Right on cue, you’re deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me. Years of ‘investigations’ have found nothing.

Yet, Trump’s assertion that “time will tell all” suggests a belief that the truth behind Omar’s finances will eventually surface. For many conservatives, this persistence reflects a necessary check on potential misuse of public office for personal gain.

Conservative Push for Accountability

Comer’s determination to uncover what he calls a “big spike” in Omar’s assets resonates with supporters of fiscal transparency. The idea that someone could go from refugee to multimillionaire in a few decades while serving in public office raises legitimate concerns about ethical boundaries.

For those aligned with Trump’s agenda, the investigation is an overdue step to ensure accountability among elected officials, especially those pushing progressive policies. Isn’t it curious that prior probes, as Omar claims, found nothing, yet her disclosed wealth continues to climb?

As this investigation unfolds, it will likely intensify the divide between Trump’s base and Omar’s supporters. The focus on Minnesota, already grappling with other federal probes and recent tragic events, underscores the high stakes of this financial scrutiny.
