Trump says he will file FCC complaint against NBC’s Kristen Welker over alleged false claims on endorsements

Ben Marquis,

Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to report NBC’s “Meet the Press” anchor Kristen Welker to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), accusing her of “purposeful inaccuracy” over her statements regarding his political endorsements.

Trump targets NBC anchor for alleged on-air misrepresentation

During recent comments, Trump specifically took issue with how Welker addressed his record of endorsements. He claimed that Welker “purposely” misrepresented facts about his endorsements during her broadcast. In response, Trump said he will notify the FCC about what he describes as fraudulent conduct by the NBC anchor.

Trump did not hold back in his statement, declaring: “Kristen Welker of NBC News is so dishonest. She purposely lied about my Endorsement record, and I will be filing a complaint with the FCC.”

Allegation centers on broadcast statements about endorsements

The heart of the dispute lies in Trump’s assertion that Welker’s statements about his endorsement record were not just incorrect, but intentionally so. While the specific content of Welker’s remarks was not detailed in Trump’s statement, the former president insisted her actions went beyond a simple mistake.

He accused Welker of acting “fraudulently” and argued that such actions should have consequences. Trump’s statement continued: “She knew exactly what she was doing. This was not a mistake, it was purposeful and fraudulent, and I will be reporting NBC and her to the FCC.”

Trump frames complaint as media accountability issue

Trump’s move against Welker is the latest chapter in his ongoing battle with major media outlets. He has frequently argued that legacy media mischaracterizes his actions and record, and he often calls out specific journalists and networks for what he sees as bias or distortion.

In this case, the former president is using the formal mechanism of an FCC complaint to raise the stakes, signaling he expects regulatory oversight to address what he describes as deliberate misinformation on a national broadcast.

Trump’s challenge to NBC and Welker was highlighted in a Fox News report covering his statements and the dispute.

Next steps: FCC process and unanswered questions

At this time, Trump has stated his intention to file a complaint, but no public record of a formal FCC complaint has yet been released. The FCC has the authority to investigate complaints related to broadcast accuracy and fairness, but it is unclear how the agency will respond if and when Trump files his report.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether NBC or Welker have responded to Trump’s allegations. Investigators will need to determine if any broadcast standards were violated and whether the statements in question rise to the level of actionable misconduct under FCC regulations.

Media institutions under renewed scrutiny

This episode puts a spotlight once again on the role of mainstream media figures and the scrutiny they face from political leaders. Trump’s willingness to escalate the matter to federal regulators highlights a legal avenue that is rarely pursued in disputes over on-air statements.

For now, the public and the press will be watching to see if Trump’s promised complaint advances and whether it prompts any change in how broadcast networks approach political coverage.

In an era of media mistrust, calls for accountability won’t be fading anytime soon. The law doesn’t coddle the press, no matter how big the network.
